While she was still studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the trash from one of juries. As a result of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay got a job right after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
